Custom Twitter Background for JessicaKnows

by Megan on November 4, 2008

Jessica Smith (@JessicaKnows) is a PR- and marketing-savvy mom involved in a lot of online networks, so it makes sense that she’d want a custom Twitter background to complement her brand (“Jessica knows something you need to know.”).

She wasn’t completely sure of what she wanted to start with (“I love total outside the box creativity, and I like to have fun. I’m total dork and goofball. Does that help?”) but she knew that she wanted a background that was unique and not like anyone else’s.

Jessica already has her photo on her Twitter page and didn’t need another photo on the background, so I started out by looking through illustrations at iStockphoto.

I initially looked for light bulb images to kind of “echo” her blog but I thought maybe Jessica would like something a little more whimsical, so I moved on to abstract searches on things like “inspiration” and “ideas.”

Once I found a few promising illustrations, I ran them by Jessica (we did all of our communication via Twitter direct messages!) and got her reaction. She was able to tell me what she liked and didn’t like, and we continued the brainstorming process until we hit upon a very promising concept that just needed some tweaks.

The original image that inspired the concept is called “Reaching the stars“, and it struck a chord with Jessica, but she knew that she wanted a silhouette of a woman instead of the man in the original. So we found another silhouette image that I was able to modify to fit the “climbing the ladder” concept.

The next step was to build the color palette and add the stars and texture details, and then it was just a matter of layering Jessica’s personal info in and making small changes until we had a background we were both delighted with.
