Jessica Smith (@JessicaKnows) is a PR- and marketing-savvy mom involved in a lot of online networks, so it makes sense that she’d want a custom Twitter background to complement her brand (“Jessica knows something you need to know.”).

She wasn’t completely sure of what she wanted to start with (“I love total outside the box creativity, and I like to have fun. I’m total dork and goofball. Does that help?”) but she knew that she wanted a background that was unique and not like anyone else’s.

Jessica already has her photo on her Twitter page and didn’t need another photo on the background, so I started out by looking through illustrations at iStockphoto.

I initially looked for light bulb images to kind of “echo” her blog but I thought maybe Jessica would like something a little more whimsical, so I moved on to abstract searches on things like “inspiration” and “ideas.”

Once I found a few promising illustrations, I ran them by Jessica (we did all of our communication via Twitter direct messages!) and got her reaction. She was able to tell me what she liked and didn’t like, and we continued the brainstorming process until we hit upon a very promising concept that just needed some tweaks.

The original image that inspired the concept is called “Reaching the stars“, and it struck a chord with Jessica, but she knew that she wanted a silhouette of a woman instead of the man in the original. So we found another silhouette image that I was able to modify to fit the “climbing the ladder” concept.

The next step was to build the color palette and add the stars and texture details, and then it was just a matter of layering Jessica’s personal info in and making small changes until we had a background we were both delighted with.

Have you heard that saying about the shoemaker’s children going shoeless? I often struggle to do the things I advise my clients to do, like blogging, refining internal systems, and personal branding.

Twitter backgrounds are the same. While I’ve been creating backgrounds for others, I neglected to create my own… but I’ve done it now!

Because this is a background for my personal Twitter account (for me, Sarah Lewis, rather than any of my businesses), I opted to have fun with it by using a friendly photo and some bright colors (contrasted with more “steady” colors that I also love).

Since it’s easy enough for people to click my website link, I opted to leave my contact info off the background and instead tried to communicate something about who I am. (In other words, I took my own advice!)

The photo shows a few interesting visual facts—that I have partially pink hair and that I’m pregnant. Even though these are obviously surface-level facts, I think that seeing them helps people get some sense of my personality (a little quirky!) and priorities (family).

Along the same lines, I used the very cool Wordle service to generate a word cloud from my Delicious tags. Applied artistically, the cloud isn’t intended to be completely “read,” but just to give viewers quick hints about the kinds of things I care about. It’s also a pretty good clue about the kinds of things I tweet about.

Because I used the pregnant-Sarah photo, I’ll obviously want to update this background in a few months, but I figure by then I’ll have some baby pictures I can’t wait to use! And because of the way I built this background, it’s pretty simple to swap out the photo.

If you’d like a personal custom Twitter background, I encourage you to get an instant quote. It’s a blast having a background that fits you perfectly!
